Guyana has launched a competitive process for the construction of the 165-megawatt Amalia Falls hydroelectric project as the South American oil producer tries to catch foreign investment to expand in key development areas, Guyana's President Irfaan Ali said on Tuesday.

Guyana needs to boost basic services including power, natural gas and cooking gas to meet expected increased demand as its oil and gas industries continue expanding rapidly, driving economic growth.

The country also is getting ready to seek foreign investment for two new international airports, while in talks with neighbor Suriname for possible offshore natural gas project integration, Ali said at the inauguration of the Guyana Energy Conference in Georgetown.
