Trump is "very disappointed" with Putin about Ukraine

September 2, 2025

Donald Trump, the U.S. president, said he was "very dissatisfied" with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. He added that his administration planned to take certain actions to reduce deaths in Russia's conflict in Ukraine.

The Republican leader said that he is not worried about the warm relations between Russia and China.

Trump met with Putin and other key leaders of the European and NATO alliances at the White House in mid-August.

Trump stated that he had expected Zelenskiy to meet with Putin bilaterally before they held a trilateral summit, which would include Trump. Zelenskiy said that Russia is doing all it can to prevent him from meeting with Putin. Russia, however, says that the agenda of such a meet-up has not been prepared.

Trump stated in an interview with The Scott Jennings Radio Show that he was "very disappointed" in President Putin and promised to do something for the people.

Zelenskiy was told by Trump that Washington would guarantee Ukraine's safety in any agreement. Trump has also re-initiated his threat to impose additional sanctions on Russia in the event of no progress towards a peaceful resolution in Ukraine.

Russia occupies about a fifth (or more) of Ukraine. Trump said that "land swapping" and changing the territory would be critical for any settlement.

Ukraine is against the idea that any Ukrainian territory should be legally recognized as Russian. It has acknowledged that it is almost certain to have to accept de facto territorial loss.

In the interview, Trump was asked if he is concerned about "an axis of China and Russia against the United States."

Trump replied: "I'm not worried at all." He continued: "We are the strongest military force in the world by a long shot." They would never use military against us. "Believe me.

Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, invited Putin to China for talks and called him his "old buddy."

Xi held Monday talks with Indian Prime Minster Narendra Modi whose country was targeted by Trump for its purchases of Russian crude oil. Reporting by Kanishka in Washington, and Ryan Patrick Jones in Toronto. Editing by Chizu Nomiyama & Alistair Bell.
