TotalEnergies offshore project in Suriname to start production in mid-2028

Annand Jagesar of the state-run Staatsolie said that the French energy company TotalEnergies, along with its partners, are on track to launch the project's output in mid-2028. He was speaking during a visit to the site to monitor the progress.

Jagesar said, "Together we are not just developing an energy project; we are writing a chapter in Suriname’s history," during the event held in Paramaribo, capital of the small South American country.

Suriname wants to emulate the transformation of neighbouring Guyana into a major oil producer through offshore development led by international energy firms.

Suriname has been able to discover a large number of oil and natural gas deposits in its waters, but the country is still waiting for its first offshore oil or gas production. Wood Mackenzie estimated that Suriname had discovered more than 2.4 billion barrels (BBL) of oil, liquids and gas in 2024.

Patrick Pouyanne, chairman of TotalEnergies said that the companies involved in this project - Staatsolie, APA Corp, and TotalEnergies - had already spent around 50% of the total investment planned. GranMorgu is the first company to develop Suriname's offshore resources.

Executives?said that well head components, tubing hangingers, and other materials made in Malaysia will be installed shortly to control the flow back of oil and natural gas to?the platform through a subsea network and pipelines.

The project is located in a large area offshore of 1.4 million acres, known as Block 58. The block is closely monitored as it's adjacent to Exxon Mobil’s massive Stabroek Block in Guyana.

Jagesar said that he also hopes to increase the country's oil and gas production offshore?in this block, where TotalEnergies is slated to drill a total of four new exploratory wells? next year.
