Mozambique expects IMF visit to pave way for new loan program

Mozambique’s Finance Ministry announced?on Friday? that a?International Monetary Fund mission had been completed. The ministry expressed the hope that this visit would pave a way for a brand new support program.

In a?statement, the ministry stated that a follow-up?mission could take place, possibly in November, in order to discuss the programme's conditions and targets.

The previous IMF program for the resource-rich Southern African country ended in early April 2025. Talks about a new deal are expected to hinge on economic reforms.

A World Bank and International Monetary Fund analysis of debt sustainability?has found that the heavy debt burden is unsustainable.

The company's debt issues date back to the 2016 scandal of hidden debt, which shook investor confidence and impacted?access?to?funding.

The situation has gotten worse due to delays in major natural gas projects, which were supposed to increase exports, revenues and government finances.

Mozambique paid off its arrears with the IMF earlier this year. Analysts believed that it would help strengthen Mozambique's case for new funding.
