Sempra and Japan's JERA sign 20-year LNG Supply Deal

July 31, 2025

Sempra Infrastructure is a subsidiary of the U.S. Energy Company Sempra. It will supply 1.5 millions tonnes of LNG per year to Japan’s largest power generator JERA under a 20-year agreement, it announced on Thursday.

Sempra's Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project in Texas will supply the LNG, it said.

The United States will be the largest LNG exporter in the world in 2024. It is expected to ship 11.9 billion cubic foot per day. This has increased in popularity since President Donald Trump lifted a moratorium in January on new export licenses.

Sempra Infrastructure CEO Justin Bird stated that the company is focused on moving its Port Arthur LNG phase 2 project forward to a final decision.

In a joint statement, the companies stated that all permits for the project have been received. The project is expected to include 2 liquefaction train capable of producing 13 Mtpa LNG.

Sempra’s Port Arthur Phase 2 Project in Texas won U.S. approval in May to export liquefied gas to markets in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on the exports of allies such as Japan, the second largest LNG buyer in world, and South Korea, while encouraging them to purchase U.S. gas and oil.

Port Arthur LNG Phase 1, which is currently being constructed, is expected commercial operation by 2027 for Trains 1 and 2 and 2028 respectively.

NextDecade, a U.S.-based liquefied gas producer, had signed a deal with JERA in late May for supplying 2 million tonnes of LNG per year from the Rio Grande Project's fifth LNG liquefaction plant. (Reporting and editing by Shailesh Kuber in Bengaluru)
