Russia's LNG Exports by Destinations and Volume

September 19, 2025

EU sources confirmed on Friday that the European Commission would propose to ban Russian LNG imports a year sooner than originally planned as part of the 19th package sanctions against Moscow. Here are some statistics about Russia's gas exports, by volume and destination.

Total exports of Russian LNG

In January-August 2025, Russia exported 18.8 million metric tonnes of liquefied gas. Of this amount, 9.5 million tons went to Asia while 9.2 millions tons went to Europe.

RUSSIA’S LNG EXPORTS INTO EUROPE

Eurostat reports that the share of Russian liquefied gas imported by the EU in the second quarter 2025 has decreased from 22% to 14%.

The frozen gas that Russia supplies to Europe is supplied by Yamal LNG, a Novatek-led company.

In the first eight month of this year, France was the biggest importer of Russian LNG in Europe. It bought around 4 million tonnes.

The Netherlands (about 1 million tons), Belgium (2.3 millions tons), Spain (1.8million tons) and Italy (7225,000 tons) are all close behind.

Some LNG Deals with Companies

TotalEnergies of France, which owns a 20% stake at Yamal LNG, receives around 4 million tonnes of LNG each year from the Montoir-de-Bretagne project.

Gazprom’s former German unit, SEFE has a contract with Yamal LNG in Zeebrugge for the import of 2.9 millions tons per year.

Novatek sells China's CNPC up to 3,000,000 tons of LNG annually.

Yamal LNG has also signed a contract to supply 1,000,000 tons of LNG with Gas Natural Fenosa in Spain.

RUSSIA's LNG Exports to Asia

Gazprom is the Russian LNG supplier for Asia.

China was the largest buyer of LNG in Russia, with 4.1 million tonnes imported between January and August, including 300 000 tons from the Arctic LNG 2 plant.

The next are Japan (3.7 millions tons), South Korea (1,4 million tons), Vietnam (613,300 tons) and Taiwan (200,00 tons). (Reporting and writing by Oksana Kobieva, Editing by Frances Kerry).
