US oil lobby group supports repeal of climate rule for vehicles but not power plants

January 12, 2026

According to its president, the American Petroleum Institute supports EPA's proposal to repeal greenhouse gas regulations for vehicles. However, it does not support the proposal for power plants and stationary industrial facilities.

API President Mike Sommers' told reporters that "we would not support the repeal of the endangerment findings for stationary sources". He added that the trade -group believes it has the "best standing" in terms of regulatory stance and that it is obvious the EPA can regulate?greenhouse gases emissions from these sources.

The EPA plans to complete its proposal to repeal the scientific determination that greenhouse gases endanger public safety, also known as the endangerment findings, in the next few days. This would remove the legal basis that underlies all'major climate regulations.

The reversal of "endangerment findings" would undermine?one of most important federal standards which had enabled the U.S.?to tackle climate change through regulating automobiles, industries and energy-producing plants that emit heat-trapping greenhouse gasses.

Sommers stated that "one of the reasons why we would not support this is because we support federal regulation of [potent green house gas] methane, and we are focused on reducing emissions as an industrial sector." (Reporting from Valerie Volcovici).
