Milei introduces bill to increase sanctions against Falklands activity

Argentina's government presented a bill to crack down on companies operating in the Falkland Island, which could escalate tensions between Argentina and the United Kingdom.

The president's office said that the law aims to "punish those who illegally exploit our natural resources, create incentives for them to stop such conduct, as well as provide the national government with tools it can use to protect itself from external threats."

Last week, the Argentinian government announced that it had begun sanctions against 60 companies and individuals involved in offshore oil exploration around these islands. Argentina calls them the Malvinas.

Argentina, which invaded the islands in 1982, fought a 10-week-long war before surrendering them to Britain, is intensifying its efforts to crack down on companies involved in the Sea Lion oil-drilling project, after U.S. president Donald Trump suggested earlier this month that Washington might reconsider its neutral position in the Falklands dispute.

Trump's remarks came amid?his frustration over?Britain?s limited support for U.S. led military operations in Middle East.
