May 19, 2026

A spokesperson for the Italian energy?group Eni said that they are considering deploying a?third Floating?Liquefied Natural Gas?platform (FLNG) offshore?Mozambique.

Eni made a final decision to invest in its second platform Coral North last October. This facility will double Mozambique’s LNG production to more than?7million metric tons annually once it is operational in 2028.

Eni's spokesperson said that the Rovuma basin has significant gas reserves, which creates opportunities for new development.

The spokesperson confirmed a report from the Portuguese news agency Lusa.

According to the U.S. energy?information administration, the coastal Rovuma basin near the border between Tanzania and Mozambique contains between 160 trillion - 200 trillion cubic feet (or tcf) of natural gas. This is one of the world's largest reserves that are only now being tapped.

The vast reserves of gas in Mozambique have also attracted the oil majors, TotalEnergies and Exxon Mobil. These companies are developing on-land LNG project that will 'draw their gas from fields located within the Rovuma basin. Reporting by Wendell Roelf. Manuel Mucari contributed additional reporting.
