Chile's Codelco copper giant names Jorge Gomez as new CEO

June 3, 2026

On Wednesday, Chile's state copper giant Codelco announced Jorge Gomez to be its new CEO as the company continues?to deal with fallout from a saga over inflated production figures.

Codelco filed a document with the CMF, Chile's financial regulator, to confirm that Gomez would take over as CEO on July 13, citing sources.

Gomez, who has been the CEO of Collahuasi Copper Mine, one of?the world's largest copper mines, since 2012, will replace Ruben Alvarado.

Alvarado was scheduled to speak before Congress on Wednesday, but he cancelled his appearance.

Gomez was a senior executive at?Codelco, responsible for?mines located in central Chile. Gomez did not respond immediately to a comment request.

The move is part of the far-right president Jose Antonio Kast’s reshaping Codelco. He has been critical about production and safety problems and promised to set it on a?new path.

In May, Kast appointed economist Bernardo Fontaine as the new chairman of board to replace Maximo Pacheco.

Mining?Minister Daniel Mas - who was appointed by Kast - announced the changes to the board. He said that the new members would be given a?special mandate' to lead an external audit and investigate recent production issues.

Codelco terminated an executive in late May and took disciplinary measures against other employees following an internal audit of 'improper reporting' of its?production figures for 2025.
