Britain tries to reassure business after Milei's Falklands Threat
Britain sought to reassure firms doing 'business' in the Falkland islands after Argentine -President Javier Milei threatened sanctions on firms engaged in a 'economic activity related to the British overseas territory.
In a document published on the government's website, less than two weeks following Milei's threats, Britain stated that it supported all legitimate business activity in the Falkland Islands and the Falkland Islanders right to control their own economy and develop their natural resources including hydrocarbons.
Milei said that he would intensify measures against companies that operate in the Falkland Islands or are connected to them, increasing pressure on businesses while Argentina pursues their sovereignty claim.
Donald Trump, the U.S. president, has said that Washington might reconsider its 'neutral position' on the Falklands conflict. Argentina has intensified its efforts to target oil companies that are involved in drilling around the Falkland Islands.
The UK Government's Position is that Argentina does not have the right to exercise jurisdiction or apply its own domestic law on the Falkland Islands. This includes any companies or individuals doing business or having a connection with the Islands.
The court said that there was no legal basis to enforce sanctions against these businesses by courts outside Argentina.
The Falkland Islands have been developing a successful economic system for years, but the previous Argentine actions had not stopped this. Britain will continue to support 'the islands' and make its position known to Argentina.
The Argentine Foreign Ministry didn't immediately respond to an inquiry for comment.
