What international sanctions are in place against Russia?
Here's a list of some of thousands of international sanctions that have been imposed against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
Energy Companies - On October 23, U.S. president Donald Trump imposed sanctions on Russian oil companies Rosneft, and Lukoil. Other companies have until November 21, 2018 to end transactions with these companies. Washington sanctioned the Russian-owned NIS oil company in Serbia on October 9. This is one of Russia's final remaining assets in Europe.
After the Russian invasion of 2022, the EU banned all maritime imports of Russian crude and the Group of Seven major Western countries imposed a $60 cap on Russian oil. The European Union and Britain reduced the cap in July 2025 to approximately 15% below the average price of the market to make it more efficient. Price caps shifted oil buyers from Europe to Asia. Trump imposed a 25% extra tariff on India due to India's purchases Russian oil in August. Trump has threatened to impose extra tariffs, but not yet imposed them, on China, a major buyer of Russian crude oil. SHADOW FLEETE - The United States and the European Union have banned all dealings with Russian oil tankers, which they claim are used to circumvent sanctions against Russia's oil exports and its ammunition purchases.
PIPELINES – The U.S., the EU and other countries have prohibited dealings with companies that are involved in Russia’s Nord Stream Gas pipelines. LNG BAN: The European Union has banned the importation of liquefied gas from Russia. This will happen by 2027.
FINANCE & INDIVIDUALS - The G7 has frozen the assets of Russia's central banks in their jurisdictions and banned any transactions with it. Despite Russian threats of retaliation, the EU wants to lend Ukraine 160 billion euros (140 billion euros) in frozen Russian assets.
The U.S., EU and other countries have prohibited transactions with major Russian financial organizations.
Sberbank, the largest Russian lender, was among those affected.
Cut off from SWIFT
A system of international payments that supports cross-border transactions. Travel bans and asset freezings have been imposed by Western countries on many Russians, for a variety of reasons including trying to undermine their democracies.
IS THERE STILL ANY TRADE? The trade between Russia and the United States, and the EU has declined since the invasion because of various import and export controls. However, billions of dollars worth of trade still takes place.
