Venture Global proposes larger expansion at Plaquemines LNG facility, filing shows

July 15, 2025

Venture Global plans to expand the Plaquemines LNG Export Facility by 24,8 million metric tonnes per annum (mtpa), which is almost 6 mtpa higher than what it proposed four months ago.

Venture Global, which is currently building the second largest LNG plant in the United States, has announced on March 6 plans to expand it by an initial 18,6 mtpa. The filing indicates that it is asking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to increase the expansion from 18.6 mtpa to 24.8 mtpa.

Venture Global was able to rapidly build and ramp-up production at its LNG facilities. According to LSEG, it has been a major factor in the U.S. remaining the largest exporter of super-cooled gas.

Venture Global informed FERC that "as a consequence of this modification, proposed production capacity has increased from about 18.6 million tonnes annually to approximately 24.8 mtpa."

Venture Global has not responded to our request for comment immediately.

According to FERC, due to the size increase of the project proposed by Venture Global, the company wants to use an additional 586 acres to the east of its previously submitted project footprint.

Venture Global is currently producing and constructing 40 mtpa LNG. A financial decision is being made on CP2, which is expected to produce 28 mtpa LNG for export. If the expansion plan for Plaquemines is approved, the company could export 92 million tons per year by the end of the decade. This would make it one of three largest LNG producers worldwide.
