Trump claims Britain is on the brink of disaster citing immigration and energy issues
Donald Trump, the U.S. president, said that Britain is "on the verge of disaster" in an interview with GB News. He expressed concerns about the high energy prices and net zero policies of the country as well as the impact of mass migration.
The relationship between Britain and Trump's United States has been turbulent over the past few years. From the heights of a pompous state visit in London in 2025, to heavy criticism in a variety of domestic and international policy areas.
On Thursday, Trump reiterated his love for Britain and his admiration of?King Charles. He also said that Prime Minister Andy Burnham's government faced serious challenges.
Your country is in trouble. "You're on the verge of disaster," he said. "You have an enormous immigration problem and a huge energy problem." Your energy levels are three to four times higher than they should be.
Trump, who has called climate change "a hoax", has criticised Britain's?"shift away from fossil-fuels" and repeatedly urged successive leaders to explore its North Sea oil reserves.
Burnham weighs whether or not to allow two large North Sea projects to proceed. He promises a pragmatic energy transition, but reiterates his government's belief that?clean sources of electricity are needed.
Trump said that immigration is changing Britain's face.
He said, "If you don’t stop people from all over the globe?pouring in to your country, you won’t?have any country left."
Many British voters are concerned about illegal immigration from Europe via small boats. This has fueled the popularity of Nigel Farage’s Reform party.
Burnham's Government has reiterated the?promises made by Keir starmer to stop such crossings. It said earlier this week that they were down sharply, and that the work to target criminal gangs and launches was paying off.
