Swedish government: pro-Russian group to target Swedish power plant in 2025

April 15, 2026

The Swedish government announced?on?Wednesday that a pro-Russian cyber gang tried to disrupt operations at a Swedish thermal power plant last year. It added that hybrid Russian?attacks have gotten more frequent and severe.

Carl-Oskar Bohlin said that the group targeted a power station in western Sweden, during the spring of 2025. However, the attack was deemed to be unsuccessful. Bohlin didn't name the power plant.

Bohlin said at a press conference that the Security Police handled the case, and they were able identify the person behind it who had connections with Russian intelligence services and security.

The minister stated that "fortunately, there were no serious consequences due to the built-in protective mechanism."

The Russian Embassy in Stockholm has not responded to a comment request immediately, but Moscow routinely denies responsibility for malicious online activity in Europe.

Security Police spokesperson stated that the agency no longer has an active investigation in the matter.

Bohlin said that the incident was similar to?attacks on Poland's energy infrastructure which Polish officials have blamed on Russian spy agencies.

He said that hybrid Russian attacks have become more dangerous and more frequent after?Russian invasion of Ukraine.

He said: "We've seen that pro-Russian individuals, and groups that previously carried out denial of service attacks, are now attempting to carry destructive cyberattacks on businesses in Europe as well as Swedish targets." (Reporting and editing by Terje Solsvik, Johan Ahlander)
