According to state media, the Malaysian authorities issued a security warning for liquefied gas facilities after an employee of state energy company Petronas was threatened by telephone to burn them down.

Petronas or Petroliam Nasional Berhad confirmed that it is working with the authorities following a directive from the National Security Council to tighten security at LNG facilities in Sarawak on Monday.

Petronas’ flagship LNG plant, the Bintulu Complex, has a production capacity of 29,3 million metric tonnes per year.

Fadillah Yassof, the deputy premier of Malaysia, was quoted saying that the government tightened security measures at LNG facilities located in Sarawak and Sabah following a Petronas worker at its headquarters receiving threatening texts.

"I have been informed that I received threatening texts from a number in Indonesia. He said that the police were still investigating who was behind this.

Fadillah said, according to Bernama. A request was made via text message. After not receiving a response, the sender threatened to burn LNG installations. The text message did not specify what the request was.

He said, "He asked for a response but since there was no reply, he threatened that he would burn our LNG. But who knows which one?"
