Grupo Carso, controlled by Carlos Slim's family, announced on Monday that it had reached an agreement with the state oil company Pemex for the drilling of 32 onshore deep wells in the eastern part of Mexico. The deal is worth up to $1.99billion.

Wells will be drilled in Mexico's Ixachi field, which is one of the top natural gas fields of the country. It's located in Veracruz, about 70 km (44 mi) south of Gulf Coast.

Ixachi reserves were hailed as one of Mexico's most significant discoveries in the past 25 years, as it strives to become energy self-sufficient.

Grupo Carso stated in a filing that the 28 wells already drilled on the field are producing 93,000 barrels per day of oil, and 715 millions cubic feet of natural gas.

Grupo Carso stated that Pemex would pay each well delivered as monthly payments starting January 2027.

The agreement aims to increase oil and gas production by drilling and completing up to 32 wells in a three-year period. (Reporting and editing by Kylie Madry; Sarah Morland)
