Shell approves Aphrodite offshore gas project

June 3, 2025

Shell Energy said that it has taken a final investment decision in its Aphrodite Gas Project offshore Trinidad and Tobago.

In a press release, the company said that it expects to start producing gas in 2027. It will reach a maximum production of 18,400 barrels oil equivalent per day.

Shell has a 45% stake in Trinidad's Atlantic LNG Plant, which is capable of producing 12 million metric tonnes per annum of super-cooled gas. However, the plant has suffered from a shortage of natural gas. Shell is not able to obtain its full share from the plant of more than 5.5 MTPA LNG.

Shell announced on Tuesday that the gas field would serve as a backup for the Atlantic LNG facility in Canada.

Shell and Trinidad and Tobago were allowed to develop the Dragon Gas Project in Venezuela, which was meant to supply Atlantic LNG with gas.

Shell says that Aphrodite allows Shell to expand its integrated gas business incrementally by building on existing development in Trinidad's east coast marine area, one of the most prolific gas producing areas.

Shell stated that the ECMA was home to Shell’s largest gas fields in the country, including Dolphin, Starfish Bounty, and Endeavour.

Shell says that it produces over 600 million cubic foot of natural gas per day in Trinidad. The increased production of Aphrodite helps maximize its utilization of existing assets. (Reporting and editing by Marianna Paraga and Curtis Williams)
