Sheinbaum, Mexico's Sheinbaum, says that former Pemex CEO was arrested in the US and will be deported
Mexico
Claudia Sheinbaum, President of the United States, announced on Thursday that Carlos Trevino - former CEO and president of Pemex - had been arrested by US authorities in order to be extradited back to Mexico, where he will face corruption charges.
It's been five years since the extradition request was made. He will be deported within the next few days. Sheinbaum announced during her daily press conference that the trial would take place in Mexico.
The president said that the arrest was a result of a complaint by Emilio Lozoya. Lozoya is also a former Pemex Director. He accused Trevino receiving approximately 4,000,000 pesos as bribes for approving a contract with Odebrecht Braskem's subsidiary for the Ethylene XXI Plant.
Trevino became CEO of Pemex during the former administration of President Enrique Pena Nieto in November 2017. He served in that position until the end the of the Enrique Pena Nieto administration, in late 2018.
The Mexican Attorney General's Office accused Trevino and his associates of illegal activities, including illicit profits. In September 2021, an arrest warrant was issued after Trevino failed to appear before a court. (Reporting and editing by Kylie Madry, Hugh Lawson and Ana Isabel Martinez)
