Rwanda claims that Mozambique has provided funding for the continuation of Cabo Delgado Mission

May 19, 2026

Rwanda's Foreign Minister said that Mozambique had secured funds for Rwanda's army to maintain its deployment in the?insurgency-hit, gas-rich Cabo Delgado Province.

Rwanda sent troops to Mozambique to stabilize areas that were previously overrun by an Islamic State insurgency.

The European Union funded part of the mission, but Rwanda's Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe claimed that they were reluctant to do so.

He wrote: "This year, Rwanda... decided exclusively to deal with the Government?Mozambique which, in turn, has secured the necessary 'funding for the Rwandan Security Forces in Cabo Delgado," he said on X.

He did not specify how much money had been raised or how long. The government of Mozambique did not respond immediately to a comment request. Rwanda warned in March it would'remove its troops if funding was not secured. Bloomberg had reported that the EU did not plan to renew their support.

Mozambique has never made the?terms?of its agreement with Rwanda public. The presence of Rwandan soldiers 'helped to weaken the insurgency,' allowing?TotalEnergies relaunch their $20 billion Liquefied Natural Gas Project in Mozambique’s far north earlier this year.
