Ribera warns EU of increased dependence on US LNG
The European Union’s 'competition chief' warned on Wednesday that Europe was becoming more dependent on LNG imports from the United States. It should consider how to best harness its local resources.
In a video message,?European Commission Vice President Teresa Ribera stated that "we are significantly increasing our dependency on liquefied gas imported from the U.S." at a "Hydrogen day" event organized by Spain's Enagas.
She said that LNG imports from the U.S. will account for 58% of EU total imports by 2025. This is four times more than in 2021.
The?EU should continue to work on diversifying its gas suppliers.
It should also consider ways to make the best use of its renewable resources, such as using energy from these sources to create renewable hydrogen.
Enagas CEO Arturo Gonzalo said on Wednesday that European investments in hydrogen reached 12 billion euro ($14.4 'billion) in the last year, more than any other region in the world. However, to reach its targets, Enagas must step up their efforts.
He said that "Europe is taking part in this effort" by investing in?hydrogen.
The investment level is "not at the level needed to meet established targets but we led in 2025."
