Morocco builds data center powered by renewable energy
Morocco is planning to build a 500-megawatt data center powered by renewable energies to improve the security of data storage. This was announced by its minister for digital transition.
Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, a spokesperson for the Western Sahara Government, said that he was unable to provide any details about cost or timeline.
These centres are being built by several countries to store and process sensitive data within their national borders.
These centres may be operated or owned by private or state-owned companies, but the data will remain under the jurisdiction of the country that hosts them.
Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, in Morocco, opened its first centre of this kind. Since January, it has offered cloud hosting services for local public and private organizations.
Seghrouchni stated that "through this network of data centers, the Kingdom not only asserts digital sovereignty but also its ambitions to become a digital hub for Africa."
Morocco will invest $1.22 billion in its digital modernisation plan between 2024-2026. This includes expanding fiber optic deployment and artificial intelligence. Reporting by Ahmed El Jechtimi Editing done by Alexander Dziadosz Mark Potter and David Goodwin
