This project is one of several mega-developments Kuwait pursues with Chinese assistance, including the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port and power and water plants. Other projects include renewable energy, waste recycling, and new residential communities.

Kuwait signed memorandums with China to collaborate on various projects in 2023, during the visit of then Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah. Sheikh Meshal was appointed emir in Kuwait in December of 2023.

According to the agency, Kuwait's assistant foreign minister for Asian Affairs stated that Kuwait and China are working together to sign contracts for major projects after Beijing has completed its study for each project.

The ambassador, Sameeh Hayat, spoke to the official news agency following the 28th Ministerial Committee for Oversight of Chinese Projects. It was chaired by Prime Minister Li Keqiang. He did not reveal the value of the project or the name of Chinese state-owned companies that would carry out the work.

Ambassador Hayat stated that Kuwait had "formally informed" Beijing of its intention to begin contracting with the Chinese company responsible for implementing two major renewable energy project.

Local media reported that State Power Investment Corp. is most likely the company.

Kuwait-China relations "are at their best in the history," Hayat, Ambassador to China, told reporters Wednesday during a reception celebrating China's National Day. (Reporting by Ahmed Hagagy, Editing by Mark Porter).
