January 20, 2026

A company spokesperson said that Inpex, Japan's carbon capture and storage project (CCS), which is a proposed 8 million ton per year?Bonaparte Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) off the north coast of Australia will submit an updated environmental plan.

The spokesperson stated that the company withdrew its plan on Sunday from a portal used to solicit public comments about major projects while it waited for details of the new environmental laws.

The spokesperson stated that Inpex was "fully committed" to the progress of the project and would resubmit it once the legislative amendments were finalised. Inpex also said they would consult the environment department about the changes.

The company did not set a deadline for resubmitting the plan to the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation?portal.

Australia revamped its environment laws late in November. It increased compliance and enforcement, while streamlining and reducing red tape in areas such as renewable energy, critical minerals and housing.

Inpex filed a separate referral to the Northern Territory Government for the project's components onshore more than a week earlier.

Bonaparte CCS?project started preliminary engineering in April. It was granted major project?status? in July. TotalEnergies, Woodside Energy and Woodside Energy are partners.

Since 2022, Australia has granted 15 offshore CCS permits.

There are two?onshore CCS operating projects: Santos' Moomba project, a 1.7 million ton project in the Cooper Basin; and the Gorgon project, a?4-million-ton project that is linked with Chevron’s Gorgon LNG project.

Chevron data indicates that Gorgon only sequestered 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide during the most recent reporting period. Helen Clark, Clarence Fernandez and Clarence Clark contributed to the reporting.
