Germany's SEFE allocates three TWh of the auction volume to Rehden Gas Storage

August 6, 2025

SEFE, a German gas company, announced on Wednesday that it has allocated the full volume of working gas it offered in an auction to its Rehden facility located in northern Germany.

SEFE Storage announced in a press release that it has allocated storage capacity of 3 TWh in underground storage Rehden, on the PRISMA platform.

The wholesale energy market is keen to know whether the gas reserves are being built in Germany sufficiently ahead of winter. Germany is Europe's largest storage location.

Internet data from European operator GIE revealed that German storage units were 62.5% filled at the start of this week, compared to 90% a year earlier.

Rehden is responsible for 45 TWh of Germany's 248 TWh technically possible gas storage. This gives a good idea of the stockpiling situation.

SEFE, or Securing Energy for Europe, recorded at Rehden a volume prior to the auction of 5.5 TWh. This corresponds to a filling rate of 12 %.

Rehden's November 1 filling goal is 45%, according to German energy security provisions.

It takes a lot longer to fill this so-called porous facility than the caverns, which make up most of Germany's storage capacity.

PRISMA does not identify the bidders, nor do they reveal the amount of their allocations. (Reporting and editing by David Holmes; Vera Eckert)
