French spot increases on weakened wind supply

December 15, 2025

The French spot electricity price on Tuesday increased as the wind generation output was expected to decline while demand was expected to increase due cooler temperatures.

The French day-ahead 'baseload power' price at 0912 GMT was 89 euros ($104.42), up 20.4% on the Friday closing price for Monday delivery.

After the Friday price for delivery on Monday closed at 87.40 Euros/MWh, the equivalent German price has not been traded.

LSEG data revealed that the German?wind energy output will fall by 8.6 Gigawatts on Tuesday to 14.7 GW.

LSEG data shows that German power consumption will rise by 1.9 GW to 62.6 GW Tuesday.

Analysts at Engie’s EnergyScan say that temperatures should remain mild for the rest of the week. However, wind output will drop dramatically over the next two days. This should push prices up.

They said that this would be short-lived as they predicted a significant increase in wind power generation for Thursday before it slowed down again at the weekend.

The French nuclear energy availability dropped by one percentage point, to 86%.

EDF, the nuclear operator, has announced a strike for Monday night and Tuesday. Recent strikes in France have only had a limited impact on the production of electricity.

The German baseload contract for the year ahead was up 0.1% to 85.25 Euros/MWh. After closing Friday at 49.40 euro/MWh, the French year-ahead contract was not traded.

EDF has responded to Fitch's comments late last week by saying that current?low market price could hinder EDF's future ability to invest, but this impact will be minimal in 2026, as the company is able to benefit from previous hedging.

The benchmark contract for the European carbon market 2025 rose by 0.6%, to 84.28 euro per metric ton.
