French ethanol consumption will increase by 15% by 2025 due to the gasoline demand

February 4, 2026

Bioethanol France, the group of producers, said that French consumption of gasoline ethanol will rise by 15% in 2025 to '19 million hectolitres, as gasoline registrations increase. This trend is expected continue.

The group stated at a press conference that 60% of the total volume consumed in France was made locally from sugar beets, wheat, corn and crop residues. They said that the remaining volume was largely sourced from other parts in the European Union.

The rise in ethanol consumption was higher than the 5.6% growth in total gasoline consumption last year in France, as consumers shifted to cheaper fuel made from crops.

In 2025, France will have registered 1,63? In 2025, France will have registered 1.63?

Sylvain Demures, Secretary General of Bioethanol France, told reporters that the demand for bioethanol will continue to grow.

After a steady growth in 2006, the consumption of superethanol E85 (which requires a flex-fuel vehicle or conversion kit) has dropped slightly over the last two years. It is expected to reach 8.6 million hectolitres by 2025.

Demoures explained that the fuel price spike in '2022 was responsible for the increase. In 2025 fuel prices were lower, so it was harder to convince people of the cost-savings.

French producers were concerned about the EU-Mercosur agreement which included a large ethanol import quota to be phased in five years after it was implemented. They believed that a higher demand would be required to absorb this quota. (Reporting by Sybille de La Hamaide Editing by Bernadette Baum)
