First time drones have hit Russia's hinterland of gas in northern Siberia

Dmitry Artyukhov, the regional governor, said that a drone had attacked an 'industrial facility' in Novy Urengoy in northern Russia. This was a first attack in the natural gas hinterland of Russia.

Artyukhov didn't identify the facility.

Ukraine's Special Forces claimed they attacked two gas condensate installations in the area -- Novy Urengoy, and Purovsky district. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy praised these strikes for the impact they had on the Russian economy.

Artyukhov wrote on Telegram: "Most important, there were neither fatalities nor injuries." The extent and type of damage is being determined."

Gazprom, the Russian energy company, did not respond to a comment request about the attack in 'the region', which is located 3,000 km (1.800 miles) away from the Ukrainian border.

The Ukrainian statement did not give any details about the damage done to the sites. The statement described the two facilities as "crucial to the gas condensate industries."

It said that "previously, this area was considered to be a safe place away from the front of?the attacker".

Zelenskiy stated that it was important to "respond in an entirely honest manner to the Russian War and?in a way so the enemy feels it."

The unofficial capital of Russian gas, Novy Urengoy, is located in the Yamal Nenets region (northwestern Siberia)

Gazprom exported?gas to Western Europe from Yamal until 2022, when the Russian war in Ukraine began.

The gas reserves in the region are estimated to be?26.5 trillion cu m by 2020, which is enough to meet global demand for six years.
