German gas storage operators criticise EU plan for implementation

INES, the industry lobby of Germany's gas storage laws, said that a draft proposal to amend Germany's law on gas storage to align it with European Union regulations and to fill up to the desired level could be unfair to certain operators. It may even reduce supplies. Germany is the largest gas consumer in Europe and has the most underground storage.

Spot prices are affected by lower demand and more solar.

The drop in demand for power and the increase in solar power in Germany pushed spot prices down on Thursday. These changes also overshadowed a predicted drop in wind energy supply on Friday. German baseload electricity for Friday fell 7.5% to 92 euros (104.65 dollars) per megawatt-hour (MWh) at 0826 GMT.

Prices to fall as demand falls ahead of the holiday

The German wholesale electricity price on Thursday was expected to fall over the four-day holidays due to low consumption. The indication for the next day's working day, which is April 22, was nearly half of the price paid for delivery on Friday. The week-ahead contract in France was priced below Wednesday's closing price.

As wind power declines, prompt prices are rising sharply

The strong anticipated loss in wind power supply has boosted European spot electricity prices on Tuesday. This overrides the effects of weaker demand before holidays later this week. LSEG's research showed that Germany would rely on imports in the near future and that thermal production was not changing much.

Germany and France have different spot prices

German wholesale electricity prices fell on Friday due to a strong wind in Germany, while they rose in France, though only from a level that was just half of the price in the larger market next door. Riccardo Paraviero, LSEG analyst, said that the signal for tomorrow was bearish. He added that consumption in the region had decreased.

The wind generation is increasing, lowering spot prices

The European immediate power prices dropped on Tuesday, primarily due to the bearish impact of forecasts that German wind power production would more than triple in the next day. By 0745 GMT, the German baseload electricity for Wednesday had fallen by 13.7% to 89.5 euros (97.93 dollars) per megawatt-hour (MWH).

Spot prices rise on forecasts of reduced wind supply

The price of European immediate power rose on Wednesday, as the wind power generation in the region is expected to drop sharply. This will lead to a tightening of supply. LSEG analyst Guomarie Wyller forecasts a halving in Germany's wind energy production. She also noted that the higher German solar output will counterbalance this bullish factor.

German Gas Storage Group urges clarification on summer filling policy

Storage operators' group INES warned on Thursday that if the German government does not decide to fill up gas caverns in time for winter, there may be shortages. The ongoing discussions over the formation a new government and the fact that the summer prices are higher than the winter prices complicate the task.

Due to Germany's increased solar output and weak demand, the price is slightly lower.

The European spot price for electricity was slightly lower on Friday as the main market Germany experienced higher solar intensity, a weaker demand and decreased gas-burning supply. This overrode anticipated gains in France. Guromarie Wyller of LSEG, an analyst, said that the fundamental situation…

French up and German down on mixed weather signals

On Wednesday, European power prices took different directions. Germany's fell due to higher wind generation while France's rose along with increased demand caused by the colder weather. The German power price for the day ahead fell by 2.8% at 0900 GMT to 122.8 Euros ($134.10) per Megawatt Hour.

RWE and TotalEnergies sign long-term agreement for green hydrogen supply

RWE, Germany's largest utility, announced on Wednesday that it had agreed to supply French oil giant TotalEnergies, with approximately 30,000 tonnes green hydrogen per year, starting in 2030. This is one of the biggest deals ever made by this sector. RWE stated that the agreement would last until 2044.

Germans indicate less wind, while the French are down on demand.

The French power price fell Wednesday due to lower usage and milder weather. In Germany, the prices rose as a result of slower wind speeds. Riccardo Paraviero, LSEG analyst, said that the increasing German consumption is another factor that will be positive for this region. At 0930 GMT, the French…

Spot prices are mixed as German winds set to fall

On Tuesday, the European spot electricity prices for Wednesday were mixed as it was expected that wind power production would fall in Germany but increase in France. German power for the day ahead increased by 0.9% at 0930 GMT to 137.75 Euros per Megawatt Hour. LSEG data shows that the French baseload rate for the day was 104 euros/MWh down 1.4%.

Uniper's hedging strategy includes selling hydropower through 2027.

The German utility Uniper said that it has sold large quantities of future hydropower production as part of an hedging strategy. Uniper sold 30% of German hydropower for 2026, at an average of 86 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh) and 5% for 2027 at 80 euros/MWh. This was revealed in a presentation to analysts on the earnings for 2024.

Prices drop due to falling demand and temperature increases

The European power price fell on Wednesday, as the consumption is expected to drop sharply due to rising temperatures. LSEG's analysis showed that German exports of power were down, while the availability of thermal power stations was not significantly different. LSEG data shows that the French…

German spot contracts increase as imports are expected on Friday

The European power market split on Thursday, with Germany's contract for Friday increasing on the back of an anticipated drop in wind energy supply. Meanwhile, a French contract was expected to rise on a rising wind turbine power demand. As of 1059 GMT, the German baseload for Friday had increased 14.6% to 192.50 Euros per megawatt-hour (MWh).

Storage levels are falling as a result of the German gas event.

The German gas market manager's meeting with key stakeholders at a trade show has not led to the subsidised gas auctions that could boost the flagging underground caverns. In the absence of progress, the biggest economy in Europe faces a question mark over its energy supply during the winter months.

EEX gains new members with the addition of more OTC trading

The European Energy Exchange EEX is expecting a strong volume increase in 2025, as more market players join the exchange to hedge renewables or use the clearing functions. This was stated by its CEO at the E-World trade show. Peter Reitz, CEO of the exchange, said that in a recent interview,…

Spot prices dip on more solar power, lower demand

European prompt electricity prices fell on Thursday, as a combination of a growing solar supply and lowered demand was expected to offset a decline in wind supply. As of 1018 GMT, the German baseload electricity for Friday fell 4.4% to 147.75 Euro per Megawatt Hour (MWh). The French baseload for the day ahead was down by 0.9% to 140.75 Euros.

EnBW chief urges for speed in new German power plant plans

The head of the major utility EnBW told an industry event in Berlin on Monday that the next German government should quickly pick up the stalled law draft on the development and expansion of gas-powered power generation. EnBW, Uniper, and STEAG are among the companies that want to build new power plants.
