Ecopetrol, Colombia's petroleum company, says a cyberattack has stolen data relating to 3,300 accounts
The?energy company?Ecopetrol, controlled by the state of Colombia, said that a cyberattack had resulted in a theft of data from about 3,300 accounts. It added that it couldn't "guarantee the breach wouldn't have a "materially adverse" financial effect. However, the company said that it did not identify any disruptions to its production, operations or financial impacts as of Friday.
Ecopetrol, Colombia's biggest company and one of Latin America's largest energy producers, accounts for more than 60% the country's hydrocarbon output.
Ecopetrol stated that the hacker was not identified, but had made extortion requests to the company. He also threatened to make the information hacked public.
Ecopetrol, the energy firm, said that the data breach had affected 15 subsidiaries. It also included Ecopetrol itself. The company added that they were able to stop a ransomware attempt.
The 'company' said that it would continue to assess any potential exposure. This could include proprietary, confidential or personal data.
