Bangladesh will develop two new LNG terminals in Bangladesh by 2030
A government minister said on Friday that Bangladesh will commission a 'new floating storage and regasification unit' by 2028 in order to import liquefied gas.
Anindya Amit, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, announced at the LNG Producer/Consumer Conference held in Tokyo on Friday that it?is?planning a land-based terminal to be developed at Matarbari.
Bangladesh has two floating LNG terminals that can regasify upto 1,100 million cubic foot per day (mmcfd).
Amit stated that the new floating terminal in Cox's Bazar will have a capacity of?approximately 600 mmcfd. The land-based terminal?will have a capacity of?regasification?of about 1,000 mmcfd.
He said that Bangladesh is expanding its infrastructure to accommodate the rising demand of the fuel in the next decade.
He said that between 2026 and 2030, the demand for additional LNG will be approximately 3-4 million metric tonnes per annum (mtpa). The additional demand is expected to grow'significantly' to 17-18 mtpa by 2031 to?2040.
According to data from Kpler, Bangladesh imported almost 7 million tons LNG in the past year. The bulk of these shipments came from Qatar.
QatarEnergy, which damaged its LNG facilities during the U.S. - Iran war, declared force'majeure' on its shipments.
