BP appoints Ian Tyler, former CEO of Balfour Beatty as its new chairperson after Manifold is ousted
BP?has named Ian?Tyler as its permanent chair, after firing Albert Manifold, who held the position for less than a month, citing concerns about governance and conduct.
BP announced that board member Amanda Blanc, who oversaw Manifold and Tyler's appointment, will not run for re-election next year at the annual general meeting. She will step down as soon as a replacement has been found.
Tyler, who is also Chairman of the building materials company Grafton Group, and Senior 'Independent Director at mining company Anglo American joined BP’s board a year ago and replaced?Manifold in May.
"Given that this role is so important, Ian will review all of his board commitments in order to make sure he has the time and energy to devote to the company," BP stated.
Manifold said he disputed BP's version, which didn't go into details about the firm’s conduct and governance issues, and he wouldn't let this "false story" go unchallenged.
A source with knowledge of the situation said in May that Manifold had hired the?lawfirm?Mishcon De Reya to represent his interests after his ouster.
Manifold was removed by surprise just eight months after he assumed office. He had been appointed to oversee a revamp of BP's strategy to refocus the company on its oil and?gas?business. This followed years of management churn.
